The program

What is Venturing?

Venturing is Scouting America’s premier program for young men and women who are 14 and up, or 13 and finished with eighth grade, and under 21. Venturing is built around Adventure, Leadership, Personal growth, and Service, known as the ALPS model.

Through Venturing, you will make friendships that last, while doing the things that matter to you. Along the way, you pick up some things that really matter later in life: planning events, running meetings, keeping budgets, and adventuring safely.

The ALPS model

  • Adventure

Challenging outdoor activities, like backpacking and climbing, and easygoing activities, like exploring the city or going to rodeos. All of it is planned and led by the youth members.

  • Leadership

The youth members run the Crew, with guidance from the Advisors. Youth plan the activities, run the meetings, lead the outings, and keep the budgets.

  • Personal Growth

Through insightful trainings and challenging activities, members develop confidence, resilience, and a sense of purpose.

  • Service

Giving back to the community is a core part of Venturing. Members plan and lead service projects, and participate in community service events.

About us

Who we are

Crew 167 was chartered in 2015 and, like many other Crews, has had its ups and downs. However, each time we rebuild, we come back stronger. For us, it’s not about the quantity, it’s about the quality.

Each iteration of Crew 167 comes with its own uniqueness. As members join, the culture changes, but the ideals stay the same. Members may move on to different things, but the impact of Venturing stays with them, and the impact they left on the Crew remains as well.

A crew tradition

The Crew Car

On a Grayson Highlands backpacking trip in 2021, someone spotted a small green matchbox car lying in the dirt on the trail. It came home with us, and it never left.

A Crew President turned it into a tradition. At each meeting the Crew Car is awarded to the member who best showed the ideals of the Scout Oath and Law. That person keeps the car until the next meeting, takes it everywhere they go, and photographs it along the way. The pictures end up on our Instagram, showcasing the places the Crew Car has been.

It has been handed down at every meeting since. Losing it is not an option anybody wants to test.

Go on - give it a push.

On the calendar

What we get up to

Twice a year we hold planning meetings where members bring their best and brightest ideas on adventures we can take part in. Everyone gets a say in what we do and when we do it. Every event is planned by two youth and an adult, giving everyone equal opportunity.

We’ve gone backpacking, hiking, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, city exploring, caving, climbing, and many others. Some traditions last through different iterations of Crew culture, like Thanksgiving in the Woods, Winterfest, and Rendezvous.

  • Thanksgiving in the Woods Every November
  • Parties Halloween and Christmas
  • Room in the Inn Yearly service, January to March
  • Rendezvous Annual VOA competition event
